Buffalo Bar

Cody's legendary Western saloon inside Cassie's since 1933. Famous for live music, swing dancing, taxidermy, and Wyoming whiskey.

The Buffalo Bar, located within the historic walls of Cassie's Steakhouse and Saloon in Cody, Wyoming, carries a legendary legacy that dates back to the end of Prohibition. Established in 1933 by Cassie Waters, a colorful and widely respected local madam, the venue originally opened as Cassie's Supper Club (also known as Cassie's Water Place). Waters chose a seven-acre parcel at 214 Yellowstone Avenue, which sat just outside the Cody city limits at the time, allowing her to operate her new dance hall and restaurant alongside her existing brothel business. The building itself is a physical archive of this past, constructed as a patchwork structure that incorporates at least five historic buildings, including an original log cabin built on a local homestead. Inside, visitors can still see the original cabin walls, the partitions where women once worked behind heavy curtains, and even Cassie's original prostitution permit framed on the wall.

Stepping into the Buffalo Bar reveals a classic Western saloon atmosphere defined by weathered wood, neon signs, and an extensive collection of taxidermy. Mounted longhorns, cow skulls, and various stuffed beasts keep watch over the curved cedar bar, where patrons can order regional Wyoming whiskeys and cold beers. For nearly three decades, from 1995 until 2023, the property was owned and operated by Steve and Mel Singer, who preserved its historic character while cultivating a family-friendly environment. The spacious venue, which has expanded to over 12,000 square feet, features multiple dining levels, two performance stages, and a massive wood dance floor where the letters spelling out Cassie's are worn into the floorboards. It has long been the premier spot in Cody for live country rock music and swing dancing, drawing a lively mix of local ranchers, cowboys, and tourists heading to Yellowstone National Park.

After a brief closure and a change in ownership that sparked community concern over the fate of the historic landmark, the property underwent a major remodel and celebrated its grand reopening in mid-April 2026. Under the stewardship of new owners, including co-owner Mike Jones, the Buffalo Bar and the accompanying steakhouse have been revitalized to continue their ninety-year legacy of Western hospitality. The menu remains true to its carnivorous roots, featuring thick-cut steaks, prime rib, and classic comfort food, while the bar serves as a bustling social hub. Whether stopping in for a drink after a day of exploring the nearby Shoshone River canyon or joining the crowd for a night of square dancing, the Buffalo Bar remains an essential piece of Cody's living history, preserving the unpolished spirit of the Wyoming frontier.
