A rustic, coastal coffee house and kitchen perched on the Russian River estuary in Jenner.
Cafe Aquatica sits on a rocky knoll in Jenner, positioned right where the Russian River estuary empties into the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 2007 by Aron Parks, the cafe was originally built with a funky, nautical aesthetic inspired by Wes Anderson's cinematic style, complete with hand-welded copper pour-over racks behind the counter. In October 2018, Parks sold the business to long-time employee Rachel Kulinski, who preserved the cafe's rustic charm while thoughtfully upgrading the property. Kulinski expanded and covered the back deck, added a sturdy windbreak to shield guests from the chilly coastal gusts, and curated a selection of local beer and wine. The building itself is a weathered wooden shack with shingled walls, a swirling turquoise and orange hand-painted sign, and glass-paneled French doors covered in stickers, including one that reads "Be kind, dammit!"
The kitchen prioritizes organic, seasonal, and non-GMO ingredients, offering a menu of coastal classics that pair perfectly with the ocean air. A standout is the Dungeness crab roll, which features fresh crab meat lightly tossed with celery and aioli, served on a toasted brioche roll with arugula and a side of pickles. On foggy mornings, the rich, brothy clam chowder provides immediate warmth, as does the smoked salmon bagel, loaded with cream cheese, organic greens, and everything seeds. Breakfast options also include avocado toast and poached eggs served on toasted focaccia bread. For those with dietary preferences, gluten-free bagels and breads are sourced from Mama Mel's Kitchen in nearby Petaluma. The coffee program remains deeply tied to the cafe's history, serving organic, fair-trade single-origin beans roasted specifically for the shop by Parks' subsequent venture, Ataria Coffee Collective, based in Freestone.
The true draw of the property is its outdoor space, where a covered wooden deck and waterside picnic tables look directly out over the water. Every Saturday and Sunday, the cafe hosts live music on its waterfront stage, showcasing emerging local artists whose acoustic tunes drift across the estuary. While listening, guests can sip a turmeric latte, a HenHouse Brewing beer, or a chilled red wine from Monte Rio Cellars. The atmosphere is slow and relaxed, punctuated by the sights of kayakers launching into the river, harbor seals basking on the nearby sandbars, and ospreys soaring overhead. For those wishing to linger into the evening, the adjoining Tasting by the Sea Wine Bar offers an outdoor deck equipped with cozy fire pits, making it easy to watch the coastal fog roll across the water.
Order a Dungeness crab roll and a pour-over, then grab a seat on the covered deck to catch the weekend live music as harbor seals swim past.
