Built on historic pilings six hundred feet out over the Columbia River, this Astoria landmark offers private balconies for watching massive cargo ships glide past against the backdrop of the Astoria-Megler Bridge.
The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa rises on pilings driven deep into the Columbia River mud, exactly where the Union Fisherman’s Co-operative Packing Company once stood. Architect and Astoria native Robert "Jake" Jacob spent fourteen years planning, permitting, and building this 46-room boutique hotel, which finally opened its doors in August 2005. Extending six hundred feet out over the water, the structure sits directly in the shadow of the towering Astoria-Megler Bridge. Jacob designed the property to replicate the industrial aesthetic of the historic canneries that once lined the waterfront, using exposed steel beams, heavy wooden trusses, and weathered timber. The result is a building that feels alive with the river, vibrating with a deep, resonant hum as the tide swells against the pilings and ocean-going freighters glide past the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The guest rooms and public spaces received a comprehensive renovation after Vesta Hospitality acquired the property, modernizing the interiors while preserving their maritime soul. Each of the rooms features a private balcony suspended directly over the shipping channel, offering views of the river traffic and the distant Washington shoreline. Inside, the design balances the ruggedness of the docks with rich comforts: hardwood floors, gas fireplaces, granite vanities, and clawfoot soaking tubs. Beds are dressed in premium linens from Naked by 1888 Mills, and the walls are adorned with original works by local artists. To deepen the connection to the site, the hotel expanded its on-site Cannery Pier Museum, which showcases historical exhibits and photographs detailing the lives of the Finnish immigrant fishermen who organized the original salmon canning cooperative here in 1895.
The daily rhythms of the hotel are deeply tied to local flavors and traditions. Mornings begin with a complimentary breakfast featuring fresh pastries sourced from a local third-generation Finnish bakery. In the late afternoon, the lobby hosts a complimentary wine and cheese reception, where guests can pair Oregon Pinot Noir with cold-smoked Chinook salmon from Josephson's Smoked Fish House. The on-site spa provides a nod to Astoria's Scandinavian heritage with an authentic Finnish sauna and a mineral-rich hot tub. For excursions into town, guests can bypass their own vehicles and ride in one of the hotel's complimentary, chauffeur-driven classic cars, which include a 1938 Packard and a 1939 Buick, or borrow one of the retro-style cruiser bikes to pedal along the adjacent Astoria Riverwalk.
Request a room on the top floor for the most unobstructed views of the Astoria-Megler Bridge. In the late afternoon, skip the drive and use the hotel’s complimentary cruiser bikes to ride down the Riverwalk to the Bowpicker fish-and-chips boat, but get there early as they close when the fresh albacore runs out.
