Sleep under canvas in Moonlight Basin with this luxury glamping retreat. High-end Summit Tents feature plush king beds, en-suite teepee bathrooms, and farm-to-table dining beneath Lone Peak.
Collective Retreats Big Sky, historically known as Collective Yellowstone, was established as a luxury seasonal glamping encampment in the Moonlight Basin of Big Sky, Montana. Founded by Peter Mack, the retreat was designed to offer high-end hotel amenities in a remote alpine setting where traditional brick-and-mortar hotels could not be built. The camp was positioned on a ridge overlooking a freshwater pond near Ulery's Lake, directly beneath the massive rhyolite face of the 11,166-foot Lone Peak. Operating primarily from June through October, the retreat provided a backcountry experience paired with curated service. The property featured a small cluster of signature Summit Tents and a central communal gathering space known as the Three Peaks Lodge. Guests at the retreat received access to the members-only Moonlight Basin Club, allowing them to utilize the surrounding private trails, beaches, and recreational facilities in the Madison Range.
The accommodations at the retreat consisted of spacious, safari-style Summit Tents built on raised wooden platforms. Inside each tent, the design combined rustic Western aesthetics with modern luxury, featuring hardwood floors covered in vintage rugs, custom wooden furniture, and a prominent antler chandelier hanging over the bed. Beds were outfitted with plush mattresses, 1,500-thread-count Egyptian cotton linens, down comforters, and heavy wool blankets to combat the cool mountain nights. For heating, each tent was equipped with a functional wood-burning stove, and full electricity powered bedside lamps and charging outlets. The private, en-suite bathrooms were housed in connected teepee-like structures directly adjacent to the main tents. These bathrooms featured modern conveniences rare in traditional campsites, including flushing toilets, hot running water, rain-style showerheads, Turkish spa towels, and premium environmentally friendly bath products.
Dining at the retreat centered around the Three Peaks Lodge, which served as the culinary and social heart of the camp. Each morning, guests were treated to a breakfast of fresh French press coffee made from small-batch local beans, delivered directly to their private tent decks, followed by a complimentary hot breakfast at the lodge. In the evenings, the on-site culinary team prepared multi-course, farm-to-table dinners under the open sky. The menu focused on locally sourced Montana meats, river-caught fish, and seasonal produce, all cooked over an open flame. After dinner, the nightly ritual moved to the communal campfire, where guests gathered for gourmet s'mores using specialized chocolate and marshmallow pairings. Beyond dining, the retreat's concierge coordinated outdoor excursions, including guided fly-fishing trips on the nearby Gallatin and Madison Rivers, horseback riding through the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, and paddleboarding on the adjacent pond.
Request a tent on the western edge of the camp for the most direct, unobstructed views of Lone Peak from your private deck. In the early morning, the first sunlight hits the rhyolite face of the mountain, creating an intense orange alpine glow that is best viewed with the fresh French press coffee delivered directly to your tent.
