Collective Retreats Vail

The pioneering luxury glamping retreat on Wolcott's historic 4 Eagle Ranch permanently closed in early 2025, ending its decade-long run of elevated wilderness stays.

Collective Retreats Vail was the pioneering flagship property of the Denver-based luxury glamping brand, founded in 2015 by CEO Peter Mack. Located on the historic, 1,000-acre 4 Eagle Ranch in Wolcott, Colorado (roughly 20 miles west of Vail Village and 20 miles east of the Eagle County Regional Airport), the retreat represented a new era of outdoor hospitality that combined five-star hotel amenities with rugged wilderness immersion. After nearly a decade of defining the high-end glamping market in the Rocky Mountains, Collective Retreats permanently closed its Vail location ahead of the 2025 summer season, pulling up its signature canvas tents and ending its operations at the ranch. During its run, the seasonal property operated from June through September, offering a secluded high-desert escape surrounded by sagebrush hills and panoramic views of the Sawatch Range.

The accommodations at the retreat were designed to offer a plush alternative to traditional camping, featuring a mix of highly curated canvas shelters. The premier option was the Summit Tent, a 440-square-foot structure built on a raised wooden platform and outfitted with a king-size bed, 1,500-thread-count Egyptian cotton linens, a wood-burning stove, and a private viewing deck with Adirondack chairs. Each Summit Tent featured a private, en-suite bathroom housed in an attached teepee-style back tent, complete with a flushing toilet, hot running water, and a rain shower stocked with premium Byredo bath products. For a more communal experience, the smaller Journey Tents offered queen or twin beds with shared luxury restrooms, while the temperature-controlled, glass-and-timber Outlook Shelters provided a modern cabin aesthetic with floor-to-ceiling valley views.

Dining and guest programming at the retreat centered on local Colorado ingredients and hands-on ranch experiences, primarily hosted at the Three Peaks Lodge pavilion. Mornings began with cooked-to-order breakfasts featuring smoked-trout bagels and fresh frittatas, or signature breakfast baskets delivered directly to the tents. Evenings featured multi-course, farm-to-table tasting menus curated by on-site chefs, alongside private cook-it-yourself barbecue baskets. A signature nightly ritual was the "Bubbly & Branding" happy hour, where guests could brand custom wooden cutting boards over the campfire while sipping sparkling wine, followed by gourmet s'mores. During the day, guests had direct access to 4 Eagle Ranch's extensive activities, including horseback trail rides, fly-fishing on the Eagle River, ziplining over Alkali Creek, and wine tastings at the on-site Vines at Vail Winery.

Basecamp Tip

Though the luxury glamping retreat has permanently closed, visitors can still experience the historic 4 Eagle Ranch by booking a horseback trail ride, visiting the Vines at Vail Winery, or attending one of the ranch's seasonal sleigh-ride dinners.
