El Capitan Canyon is a 350-acre nature lodging resort situated along the Gaviota Coast, roughly twenty miles west of Santa Barbara. Originally established in 1970 as a rustic private campground, the property underwent a complete transformation in 2000 under developer Chuck Himovitz, who pioneered the modern glamping concept by introducing cedar cabins and safari tents while preserving the surrounding wilderness. The canyon itself holds a deep history, once serving as a seasonal gathering site for the Indigenous Chumash people, whose legacy is still honored in the preservation of the ancient sycamore and oak groves that shade the property. Today, the resort balances low-impact, eco-conscious design with comfortable amenities, operating as a refined coastal retreat managed under the Sun Outdoors portfolio.
Accommodations are designed to blend into the natural contours of the canyon, arranged in small villages along the seasonal El Capitan Creek. The signature cedar cabins feature vaulted ceilings, French doors, private bathrooms, and kitchenettes equipped with microwaves and mini-fridges. For a more rustic experience, the safari tents are built on raised wooden decks, while the circular adventure yurts feature lattice walls and domed skylights designed for stargazing from a queen-size bed. The resort recently expanded its lodging options with the introduction of the Elderberry Cottages, a collection of upscale, one-of-a-kind accommodations featuring gas fireplaces, Nespresso coffee makers, double sinks, and private decks. Regardless of the lodging style, every site is furnished with an outdoor picnic table and a private fire pit with a removable grill grate, allowing guests to cook in the open air.
Dining and daily activities center around the Canyon Market and Deli, a rustic building with a corrugated tin roof that serves as the social heart of the property. The deli prepares hot breakfasts, hand-crafted pizzas, salads, and tri-tip sandwiches, and stocks organic groceries, Santa Barbara County wines, and custom barbecue kits complete with marinated meats, sides, and firewood for grilling at your cabin. From the market, fifteen miles of private trails wind into the hills, including the popular Selma Rubin Trail, which leads to an on-site llama and goat farm where guests can interact with the animals. Guests can also borrow complimentary adult beach cruiser bicycles to ride down to the adjacent El Capitan State Beach, soak in the heated swimming pool, or book a massage at the creekside Spa Cabin. On Saturday evenings from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the resort hosts its long-running Canyon Concert Series, bringing local musicians to the lawn for live performances paired with a classic backyard barbecue.
Order a pre-packaged grill kit from the Canyon Market in the afternoon, then head to the lawn on a summer Saturday evening to enjoy the seasonal Canyon Concert Series and backyard barbecue.
