A historic Route 66 coffeehouse and roastery serving small-batch blends, house-made syrups, and evening spirits in an 1888 landmark.
Firecreek Coffee Company occupies a commanding presence on Historic Route 66, situated directly across from the old Flagstaff train station in the historic Donahue Building. Dating back to 1888, this landmark structure is one of the oldest in the city, providing a rugged yet refined backdrop for the roastery. The facade features green stucco and black-framed windows, while the interior opens into a cavernous, high-ceilinged space defined by exposed stone walls, distressed multi-colored wood paneling on the bar, and vintage Victorian-style pressed ceiling tiles. Founded in 2008 by Mike Funk, who relocated to northern Arizona from Seattle, Firecreek has grown from a single roasting operation into a beloved statewide brand, yet this Flagstaff flagship remains the spiritual heart of the company. It serves as a bustling community living room where Northern Arizona University students, off-duty river guides, and travelers gather over the low rumble of passing cargo trains.
The coffee program at Firecreek centers on micro-lot beans sourced through sustainable trade practices directly from individual farmers. Roasting takes place in small, hand-monitored batches just a few blocks away, allowing the roasters to fine-tune profiles for Flagstaff's high-altitude environment. The signature Boxcar espresso blend serves as the foundation for their espresso drinks, characterized by a robust profile with notes of chocolate and citrus. For purists, the menu features an Espresso Set, which presents a split shot of espresso served two ways: one neat and one with steamed milk, presented on a slate alongside a glass of sparkling water. Unlike many contemporary cafes, Firecreek eschews commercial flavorings, opting to craft all of its syrups from scratch in-house. This dedication is evident in specialty creations like the salted cardamom latte, the horchata latte made with almond and cinnamon, and the popular Campfire Latte, which recreates the toasted sweetness of a s'more.
Beyond the morning caffeine rush, the venue transitions seamlessly into a cultural hub for downtown Flagstaff. The rear of the cafe features a dedicated stage that hosts a rotating calendar of live music, poetry slams, and community events, supported by a selection of craft beers, wines, and classic cocktails. During the day, the kitchen keeps pace with the coffee bar, offering a selection of house-baked pastries, savory quiches, and hearty breakfast burritos. Visitors can pair a pour-over, brewed using a clever dripper, with a slice of vegan, gluten-free crumb cake or a fresh cheddar chive scone. The atmosphere is unpretentious and slightly gritty, decorated with rotating exhibits by local visual artists. It functions not just as a quick pit stop for fuel, but as a genuine reflection of Flagstaff’s creative, mountain-town community.
Order the Espresso Set to sample their signature Boxcar blend both neat and with milk, and check the back stage schedule for evening live music.
