A classic midcentury road oasis set within 500 acres of private ponderosa pine forest, offering spacious, lodge-style rooms and a nostalgic nod to the golden age of western travel.
Little America Flagstaff stands as a grand, midcentury roadside sanctuary, positioned just off Interstate 40 yet insulated by a massive 500-acre canopy of ponderosa pines. Opened in 1973, this historic property offers immediate relief from the sun-baked stretches of the high desert, greeting travelers at nearly 7,000 feet of elevation where the air is crisp and smelling of vanilla-pine bark. The lodge's low-slung, stone-and-wood architecture evokes the classic era of American road-tripping, serving as a welcoming beacon for travelers journeying toward the Grand Canyon or along old Route 66. It preserves a vast stand of the Coconino National Forest, which is part of the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in North America, a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity from the nearby San Francisco Peaks.
Following a comprehensive two-and-a-half-year renovation completed in 2018, the hotel's interiors have been completely reimagined to showcase the geology and craftsmanship of the Southwest. The lobby features custom-designed chandeliers with shades crafted of selenite, a translucent crystalline gypsum, and thin slices of blue-green chrysocolla mined in Morenci, Arizona, hanging over the fireplace. Guest reception tables are crafted from opaque slabs of local stone, while the 247 guest rooms are equipped with polished, raw-edge Canadian big-leaf maple desks and custom Irish wool carpets woven with Native American motifs. The oversized rooms start at a generous 400 square feet and are spread across four distinct lodges. Each space features floor-to-ceiling windows looking directly into the quiet forest, down bedding, Spanish tile showers, granite countertops, and clothing steamers in place of standard irons.
The heart of the main lodge is the Silver Pine Restaurant and Bar, where floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the forest and a newly added outdoor patio features cozy fireplaces and a tranquil waterfall. The kitchen specializes in made-from-scratch American comfort food with Southwest-inspired flavors, serving classics like huevos rancheros, prime rib, and their famous thick-cut sourdough French toast. Outside, a paved two-mile nature trail winds through the private forest, where guests can watch for tufted-eared Abert's squirrels and mountain chickadees under the towering pines. During the winter months, the entire 500-acre forest transforms into a dazzling winter wonderland illuminated by millions of colorful holiday lights, cementing its status as a timeless sanctuary where the journey itself becomes the destination.
Skip the standard highway stops and walk the hotel's private two-mile paved loop trail at dusk, keeping an eye out for tufted-eared Abert's squirrels. Afterward, head to the Silver Pine Restaurant for their famous, thick-cut sourdough French toast, a beloved menu staple that has fueled travelers for decades.
