The Lodge at Sandpoint, built in 2007 by innkeepers Glenn Harvey and Leslie Wood, sits on the southern shore of Lake Pend Oreille at the edge of Sagle, Idaho, just across the landmark Long Bridge from downtown Sandpoint. Designed to evoke the comfort of a grand, private vacation home rather than a commercial hotel, the boutique property blends North Idaho's logging heritage with classic lakeside hospitality. Visitors arriving in the summer months are greeted at the entryway by a massive wooden water wheel and pond, which sends a cool cascade of spray into the pine-scented air. The exterior architecture relies heavily on heavy timber and rugged stone, integrating the building with the surrounding Selkirk Mountains.
Inside, the centerpiece of the lodge is the Great Room, a communal space defined by high trussed ceilings, massive open beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out across the water. A giant stone fireplace, famously described by locals as large enough to fit a classic Volkswagen Bug, serves as the room's anchor, flanked by deep, cozy chairs, bookshelves stocked with reading material, and local artwork. The lodge features 29 spacious guest accommodations, including traditional rooms, bedroom suites, studios, two rustic cabins, and a standalone small house. Guest rooms are equipped with pillow-top beds, plush linens, and refrigerators, while select lakeside rooms add gas fireplaces, wet bars, and private balconies or patios that frame views of the lake and the distant ski runs of Schweitzer Mountain.
The property occupies 600 feet of private sandy beach, complete with manicured grounds, a gazebo, and a private dock that serves as a launching point for summer boating and paddleboarding. While the lodge once housed the popular lakeside restaurant Forty-One South, which permanently closed its doors in October 2021, guests today can enjoy a simple continental breakfast in the morning before heading across the bridge to explore Sandpoint's vibrant downtown dining scene. In the winter, the lodge shifts its focus to the slopes, providing a warm, fireside retreat for skiers returning from Schweitzer Mountain Resort, located just 12 miles to the north. Additional amenities include a fitness room with cardio and weight equipment, outdoor hot tubs, and a 24-hour front desk staffed by locals.
While the lodge no longer has an active restaurant on-site following the closure of Forty-One South, you can easily walk or bike across the adjacent Long Bridge trail straight into downtown Sandpoint for dinner.
