Skyview Los Alamos

A restored 1959 hilltop motor lodge featuring mid-century design, a heated adults-only pool, and a working vineyard.

Skyview Los Alamos stands as a meticulously restored 1959 landmark, perched on a five-acre hilltop overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley and the historic town of Los Alamos. Originally built to serve as a stylish rest stop for road-trippers navigating California's bustling Highway 101, the motel was a sun-drenched oasis where local families would pay 25 cents to swim in the pool. Over the decades, the property fell into deep disrepair, earning the local nickname of the "Bates Motel" due to its eerie, abandoned silhouette. In 2016, the Nomada Hotel Group, led by founder and creative director Kimberly Walker, acquired the property and initiated a comprehensive two-year renovation. Reopened in 2018, the boutique hotel preserves its classic mid-century skeleton while introducing high-end modern comforts. Iconic original features were carefully salvaged and integrated into the redesign, including the towering yellow neon "MOTEL" sign, the vintage carport supported by hand-carved wooden cacti pillars, and the iconic kidney-shaped swimming pool.

The property features 33 guest rooms designed with a blend of Palm Springs modernism and rustic Americana. Among these are 16 deluxe rooms, which boast private hardwood decks complete with private gas fire pits and open-air outdoor showers, ideal for stargazing in the cool evening air of the Central Coast. Inside, the spaces are warm and tactile, detailed with leather accents, custom wood furniture, brass fixtures, down duvets, and indoor gas fireplaces to ward off the valley's evening chill. Design touches include cowhide rugs on hardwood floors, Pendleton blankets, crisp white shiplap walls, Tivoli speakers, and old-fashioned metal keys to unlock the doors. The bathrooms, while maintaining their compact original footprint, are finished with clean marble, modern fixtures, and thoughtful extras like Marvis toothpaste. Guests can also enjoy complimentary Linus bicycles to ride down the hill into town, where tasting rooms and acclaimed restaurants line Bell Street.

At the heart of the social scene is the heated, adults-only pool, which is strictly reserved for guests aged 21 and older to ensure a serene environment. The former asphalt car park has been transformed into a central courtyard xeriscaped with cactus, prairie grass, sotol, agave, lavender, and wildflowers, dotted with water fountains, fire pits, and Adirondack chairs. Adjacent to the pool deck is Norman Restaurant and Bar, a cheeky tribute to the property's cinematic past. Norman serves a menu of upscale diner classics, such as steak frites and house burgers, paired with robust craft cocktails and a curated wine list. Adding to the estate's unique character is its own working 2.5-acre hillside vineyard, which produces the grapes for Skyview’s signature house rosé, served poolside or by the communal fire pits. This thoughtful combination of nostalgic architecture, localized dining, and vineyard views makes the motel a self-contained sanctuary that honors its roadside heritage.
