Sunlight Mountain Resort

Slopeside condos, a historic base lodge, and a quiet mountain campground on an unpretentious, old-school Colorado ski hill.

Sunlight Mountain Resort is beloved for its unpretentious, old-school Colorado ski character, a stark and welcome contrast to the upscale mega-resorts further up the Roaring Fork Valley. Located 12 miles south of Glenwood Springs at the end of Four Mile Road, the resort offers an intimate slopeside lodging experience centered around the Brettelberg Condominiums and the rustic Sunlight Lodge Bed & Breakfast. Rather than high-end luxury glamping tents, which are actually located miles away down in Glenwood Canyon, the stay experience here is defined by classic, ski-in, ski-out convenience and a laid-back mountain community. The Brettelberg, affectionately known as "The 'Berg," serves as the premier basecamp on the mountain, offering 26 individually owned and decorated vacation rental units that sit directly on the ski slopes of Compass Mountain.

The Brettelberg Condos provide the only true slopeside lodging at the resort, allowing guests to click into their bindings right at their doorstep. Ranging from cozy studios to multi-bedroom layouts, each unit reflects the personal style of its owner, complete with fully equipped kitchens, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. After a day exploring Sunlight's 730 skiable acres or hiking the surrounding trails in the White River National Forest, guests gather in the communal spaces of the complex. The shared outdoor hot tub is a central gathering spot, alongside deck grills, a fire pit, and a spacious recreation room featuring a pool table, a library, and a large stone fireplace. Just down the lane, the Sunlight Lodge Bed & Breakfast offers a traditional lodge experience with comfortable, rustic rooms and easy access to the mountain's base lodge, where the Out of Bounds Grill serves up house-made mesquite-smoked pork green chili.

During the warmer months, the mountain transitions into a quiet haven for hikers, mountain bikers, and disc golf enthusiasts who come to play the on-mountain 18-hole course. Starting in summer 2026, Sunlight Mountain Resort is expanding its rustic lodging options with the introduction of a dedicated mountain campground. This new addition features 22 peaceful, uncrowded campsites designed for tents, camper vans, and small RVs, operating from mid-May through mid-October. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, with potable water available at the main lodge. This campground offers a cooler, high-altitude alternative to staying in the valley below, while still keeping guests within a 25-minute drive of the historic mineral waters of Glenwood Hot Springs, which the indigenous Ute people traditionally held as sacred healing grounds.

Basecamp Tip

Book a condo at the Brettelberg for the only true ski-in, ski-out access on the mountain, or reserve one of the 22 rustic campsites starting in summer 2026 to escape the valley heat.
