Mid-century motor lodge reimagined as a design-forward desert retreat with a lively pool scene, local art, and daily sunset toasts.
The Tuxon Hotel occupies a thoughtfully rehabilitated 1969 motor lodge situated just off Interstate 10, offering a design-forward basecamp that honors its roadside roots. Developed by Tucson natives Vishal and Sunny Patel, the boutique property features 112 guest rooms arranged across three two-story buildings connected by exterior catwalks. These structures frame a central courtyard, creating an intimate, communal layout where the indoor and outdoor spaces merge through expansive glass walls. The design aesthetic, crafted in collaboration with local creatives, blends mid-century modern architecture with deep regional influences, incorporating materials like saddle leather, rustic grey wood, brass, and potted desert succulents. Throughout the property, the walls showcase bold, custom murals and artwork from celebrated regional artists, including Ishi Glinsky, Joe Pagac, and Jessica Gonzales.
At the physical and social center of the property is the Shady Cactus Swim Club, a vibrant poolside hub centered around a curved, banana-shaped swimming pool. This space serves as a gathering point for both travelers and Tucson locals, who come to lounge under bright yellow umbrellas on rope-woven blue chairs. The club features a regular lineup of events, including vinyl record nights on Wednesdays and live DJ sets on weekends. Every afternoon at 5:30 PM, the ringing of a ranch bell signals the start of the Shady Toast, a daily ritual where guests gather for a complimentary drink or mini-slush shot to celebrate the transition into the desert evening. The poolside bar serves a menu of chef-driven, Latin-inflected dishes and craft cocktails, ranging from rojo pork street tacos and green chile egg scrambles to frozen margaritas and chili-laced slushies.
The guest rooms are compact yet highly functional, designed to maximize comfort while avoiding traditional hotel clichés. Each room features concrete floors, walk-in tiled showers, and custom-built wood furnishings, accented by textiles in a palette of ochre, sage, and sky blue. Modern conveniences are seamlessly integrated, including high-speed Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and in-room coffee setups, alongside eco-friendly, plant-based bath products. Outside the rooms, the property provides communal amenities such as outdoor fire pits, barbecue grills, and a well-equipped 24-hour fitness center. Guests can also make use of complimentary bicycles to explore the nearby Mercado District or ride along The Loop, a 131-mile paved trail located just two blocks from the hotel.
Plan to be poolside on Wednesday evenings for vinyl night, and make sure to grab a complimentary drink when the ranch bell rings at 5:30 PM for the daily Shady Toast.
