An intimate, off-grid glamping retreat of five safari-style tents set along the 37th parallel near Kanab, Utah.
BaseCamp 37 is an intimate, off-grid glamping retreat situated along the 37th parallel, eight miles east of Kanab, Utah. Established in 2017 and currently operated by host Stephanie, this women-owned property sits on ten acres of open high desert terrain against the backdrop of the Chocolate Cliffs of the Grand Staircase. Unlike massive, commercial glamping developments that pack dozens of canvas structures together, this site features only five safari-style tents spaced generously across the land. The result is a quiet, personal stay that feels closer to a boutique bed and breakfast than a standard campground, allowing guests to experience the stillness of the desert without sacrificing comfort.
The five canvas tents on the property are named after regional legends and landmarks: the Hayduke, Katie Lee, Josey Wales, Powell, and Escalante. Each tent is built upon a sturdy wooden platform and features a private front deck equipped with a propane heater or fire pit, perfect for watching the sunrise over the red rock cliffs. Inside, guests find California King memory foam beds, high-quality linens, comfortable lounging chairs, and private solar arrays that generate enough off-grid electricity to power lights, fans, and device chargers. Because the property operates entirely off the grid, high-wattage appliances such as hair dryers are prohibited, preserving the delicate balance of the solar system while encouraging a slower, more intentional pace of life.
At the center of the camp is the Guest Lodge, a communal hub that provides the practical comforts of home. The lodge features two full bathrooms with hot, high-pressure showers and flush toilets, a half bath, and two fully equipped indoor kitchens with shared refrigerator space and dry food storage. Outside, the lodge opens up to a spacious entertainment area complete with propane grills, a food preparation station, and a rustic BYOBar where travelers swap stories of their desert adventures. When the desert heat peaks, guests can cool off in the property's seasonal cowboy pool, a small plunge pool surrounded by comfortable lounge chairs. As night falls, the camp transforms into a dark-sky sanctuary: guests gather around the communal fire pit for complimentary s'mores, use the on-site telescope to view the Milky Way, and fall asleep to the distant sounds of coyotes.
Book the Katie Lee or Hayduke tent if you want a futon for an extra guest. Spend your evenings at the communal lodge, where you can plunge into the cowboy pool, grill dinner, and use the telescope to view the exceptionally dark night skies.
