A shingled coastal sanctuary on the Sonoma Coast bluffs, featuring wood-burning fireplaces, bay-view fire pits, and local seafood.
The Lodge at Bodega Bay sits on a seven-acre bluff of cypress and pine, overlooking the salt marshes, the quiet harbor, and the dramatic sweep of Doran Beach. Founded in 1972 by Ellis and Katherine Alden of the Woodside Hospitality Group, the property began as a modest 36-room motor lodge before evolving over five decades into an 83-room coastal sanctuary. The architecture consists of nine shingled, two-story buildings designed to blend with the weathered vernacular of the Sonoma Coast. In the main lobby, exposed timber beams, a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and a sepia floor map of the bay establish a mood of rustic, grounded luxury. A recent multi-million dollar redesign by Superette Studio refreshed the property with a palette of deep blues, earthy grays, and warm whites, utilizing cerused oak, forged iron, and relaxed linens to mirror the maritime landscape outside.
Each of the 83 guest rooms is configured as a private retreat, oriented to capture views of the Pacific Ocean or the adjacent bird sanctuary where blue herons and egrets wade through the shallows. The accommodations, ranging from the classic Bodega Bay rooms to the expansive Captain's Quarters, feature real wood-burning fireplaces, private balconies or verandas, and deep two-person soaking tubs. Pinstriped rugs, farmhouse wood paneling, and custom furniture are complemented by plush bedding and Lather bath products. Outside, the landscaped grounds connect the buildings via wind-sheltered pathways, leading to a heated outdoor swimming pool and an infinity-edge hot tub that sits directly above the marshland. Nearby, a freestanding infrared sauna features a massive viewing window designed to frame four distinct bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean, Bodega Bay, Bodega Harbor, and the surrounding wetlands.
Dining at the lodge centers on the culinary heritage of the Sonoma Coast, anchored by two distinct venues. Drakes Sonoma Coast, the main dining room, features west-facing bay windows that frame the sunset over Bodega Head, casting a warm glow over leather armchairs and local artwork. Here, the kitchen prepares seasonal, sustainably sourced coastal cuisine, highlighting local ingredients like Hog Island oysters, Drakes famous crab cakes, and fresh catches paired with boutique Sonoma County wines. For a more casual setting, Drakes Fireside Lounge offers a bar top crafted from a 300-year-old elm tree and a cozy interior fireplace. Outside the lounge, three massive stone fire pits with plush seating provide a space to gather with a local Pinot Noir as the fog rolls in across the harbor, accompanied by the low, rhythmic groan of the distant foghorn.
For the ultimate panorama, request a Pacific Coast Upper room on the second floor; these feature vaulted ceilings and elevated vantage points over the bird sanctuary and Bodega Head. In the evening, grab a seat at Drakes Fireside Lounge early to snag one of the chairs around the outdoor fire pits, and pair a local Freestone Coast Pinot Noir with a plate of Hog Island oysters.
