An exclusive eight-tent luxury glamping retreat set on a historic 500-acre cattle ranch along the West Fork of the Dolores River.
Dunton River Camp occupies a former late-nineteenth-century cattle ranch known historically as Cresto Ranch, spanning 500 acres of meadows and pine forest along the West Fork of the Dolores River. Owned by Christoph Henkel and Katrin Bellinger, this seasonal retreat operates from June through mid-October as a sister property to the nearby Dunton Hot Springs ghost town, which sits four miles upstream. The camp features eight spacious, safari-style canvas tents, each anchored to the bedrock on a 640-square-foot wooden platform. Four River Tents sit mere feet from the rushing water, while four Mountain Tents are positioned slightly higher on the hillside among stands of old-growth aspen trees. The heart of the camp is the original restored farmhouse, dating back to the late 1800s, which sits just twenty feet from the riverbank and serves as the central lodge for guests.
Inside the tents, the design balances rustic frontier history with refined comforts. The custom-designed king beds, conceived by designer Christina Rossi and crafted by a local furniture maker in Montrose, Colorado, are intentionally positioned away from the tent walls to maximize airiness. Each tent is warmed by a cast-iron gas stove to ward off the high-altitude mountain chill and features a private covered porch complete with teak steamer lounge chairs. The en-suite bathrooms are remarkably robust for canvas structures, equipped with running hot water, towel warmers, double vanities, and six-foot soaking tubs with integrated showers. Guests are also provided with two dedicated mountain bikes per tent, allowing for self-guided exploration of the ranch's old logging roads and singletrack trails.
Dining at the camp centers around the historic farmhouse and an outdoor deck equipped with pine-and-steel biergarten tables. The culinary team emphasizes hyper-local sourcing, featuring ingredients like wild chanterelle and boletus mushrooms, Colorado lamb, and organic produce grown at Dunton's own farm and vineyard, paired with wines from nearby Sutcliffe Vineyards. Days are anchored by fly fishing on a private, trout-rich stretch of the Dolores River, relaxing in the riverside wood-fired sauna, or utilizing the dedicated spa tent. Recently, the camp introduced a brand-new cocktail lounge called Barbara's Bar, and transitioned to an adults-only format for the majority of the summer season, reserving specific weeks in mid-summer for family-oriented bookings.
While fly fishing on the private stretch of the Dolores River is included, coordinate with the staff to arrange a soak at the historic natural hot springs of its sister property four miles upstream.
