A historic, climber-owned boutique art hostel in downtown Bishop, offering communal vibes, a shared kitchen, and gear for Eastern Sierra adventurers.
The Hostel California occupies a historic 1885 building originally constructed by William Chalfant, the founder of the Inyo Register. Located at 213 Academy Avenue in downtown Bishop, the property functioned as a local bed and breakfast before being transformed in June 2014 into a boutique art hostel designed specifically for climbers, backpackers, and Pacific Crest Trail thru-hikers. The spirit of the space remains deeply rooted in the climbing community, a connection solidified recently when professional climber and highball specialist Nina Williams took ownership of the property. Williams continues the hostel’s long-standing tradition of providing a welcoming, climber-centric refuge that balances social camaraderie with practical, budget-friendly lodging.
Inside, the hostel’s design reflects its colorful, bohemian roots as an artistic sanctuary and an LGBTQI+ safe space. Brightly painted walls are decorated with climbing gear, historic photographs, and posters of legendary mountaineers, while shelves are stacked with an extensive library of climbing guidebooks and regional literature. Accommodations are strictly adults-only, offering a mix of shared dormitories with memory foam mattresses and private rooms, such as the Mt. Tom room, which features its own private bathroom and writing desk. The communal kitchen serves as the social heart of the property, equipped with multiple refrigerators, commercial-grade stoves, and a shared "free shelf" where departing travelers leave behind ingredients for the next wave of guests.
Beyond the kitchen, the social spaces extend to a spacious living room featuring a ping-pong table, musical instruments, and a retro arcade games room. Outside, a communal garden and shaded patios offer quiet spaces to swap route beta, dry gear, or relax after a long day on the monzonite. Guests can take advantage of practical amenities designed for mountain athletes, including free-to-borrow bicycles and skateboards for cruising around downtown Bishop, as well as crash pad rentals for those heading out to the boulders. Situated just a block off Highway 395, the hostel is a short walk from local gear shops, bakeries, and grocery stores, making it a highly functional basecamp for exploring the Eastern Sierra.
Borrow one of the hostel’s complimentary cruiser bikes to navigate town, and check with the front desk about on-site crash pad availability before driving out to the Buttermilks.
