Hotel Saint George stands on the exact footprint of Marfa's original 1886 hotel of the same name, which once served cowboys and Southern Pacific Railroad travelers before closing in 1929. Reimagined by Houston architect Carlos Jiménez and owned by longtime resident and cultural advocate Tim Crowley, the modern incarnation is a sleek, four-story white and gray structure that mirrors the minimalist aesthetic popularized by Donald Judd. Rather than erasing its past, the design incorporates salvaged materials from the site's previous lives, exposing original concrete floors, reclaimed brick walls, and century-old wooden ceiling beams. The spacious lobby serves as a communal living room for both locals and travelers, anchored by a massive mahogany check-in desk and white steel cylinder hanging lamps designed by local fabrication studio SILLA.
The 55 guest rooms, including six suites, offer a stark, elegant retreat from the intense West Texas sun. Inside, the design is intentionally restrained, featuring platform beds, sheepskin rugs, and custom minimalist furniture. Because the active railroad tracks run nearby, rooms are thoughtfully stocked with complimentary earplugs, a practical nod to Marfa's industrial pulse. Bathrooms are stocked with premium Aesop products. The hotel doubles as a world-class gallery, displaying over 300 original artworks throughout its public and private spaces.
