The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

A classic timber-and-stone lakeside resort featuring Montana's only lakefront dining, a full-service spa, and a private marina.

The Lodge at Whitefish Lake stands as a premier lakefront resort on the western shore of Whitefish Lake, framed by the 28-acre Viking Creek Wetland Preserve. Developed by the Averill family, fifth-generation Montanans who completed the current timber-and-stone complex in 2005, the property is one of the state's few AAA Four Diamond-rated resorts. The architecture channels the grand historic lodges of the American West, utilizing hand-hewn timber, native stone, and expansive glass to connect guests directly to the water and the surrounding pine forest. The resort is divided into the Main Lodge and the Viking Lodge, which are connected by an enclosed sky bridge spanning Wisconsin Avenue, alongside a collection of private lakefront condominiums and luxury vacation homes.

Inside the accommodations, the design balances rustic Montana heritage with refined comfort. Guest rooms and suites feature working fireplaces, rich leather furnishings, plush linens, and deep soaking tubs set alongside slate showers. For larger groups, the 2,400-square-foot Averill Suite offers a three-bedroom corner layout with two private balconies overlooking the lake. The culinary program centers around the Boat Club Restaurant and Lounge, the only lakefront dining venue on Whitefish Lake. Here, diners can enjoy signature dishes like pan-seared beef tenderloin tips, veal osso bucco, and the house-favorite Boat Club chips, either beside a crackling fire in the dining room or on the outdoor deck during summer sunsets. The resort also features the Coffee Dock for morning espresso, and the seasonal, open-air Tiki Bar and Grill for casual lakeside drinks.

Recreation and wellness are anchored by the lake and the adjacent wetlands. The on-site marina serves as a hub for water sports, renting out pontoon boats, jet skis, paddleboards, and kayaks, while also offering private charters on classic wooden motor yachts, the Lady of the Lake and the Laurie Jo. This nautical heritage is celebrated annually during the Whitefish Woody Weekend, which brings dozens of vintage wooden boats to the docks. For relaxation, the Spa at Whitefish Lake provides custom facials, hot stone massages, and a quiet relaxation lounge stocked with herbal teas. Guests can alternate between the lakefront pool and hot tub, the Viking Falls pool, or quiet walks along the interpretive trails of the neighboring Viking Creek Wetland Preserve, ensuring a balanced mountain retreat.

Basecamp Tip
