Pack Creek Campground (historically known as Ron's Pack Creek Campground) is a quiet, family-owned refuge situated just three miles south of downtown Moab. Unlike the dusty, highway-adjacent RV parks that line Main Street, this four-acre property is situated along Murphy Lane, positioned behind the Pack Creek Mobile Estates. At an elevation of 4,469 feet, the campground sits on a grassy, tree-shaded flat along the banks of Pack Creek, where mature cottonwoods and leafy willows provide a cooling canopy. The creek itself flows down from the nearby La Sal Mountains, which rise to nearly 13,000 feet and frame the eastern horizon. This is the ancestral homeland of the Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) and Southern Paiute people, who have long held these mountains and valleys sacred.
Established in the 1970s, the campground has maintained an old-school, rustic Moab character that appeals to travelers seeking simplicity rather than resort-style commercialization. The property is owned and operated by Maureen Cain, who has spent years cultivating the lush lawns, planting trees, and maintaining the exceptionally clean bathhouse. One of the campground's most respected traditions is its commitment to service: active-duty military members and their immediate families are welcomed to camp for free for up to three nights. The atmosphere here is intentionally quiet and community-oriented, with a strict off-highway peace that makes it feel miles away from the tourist bustle of Spanish Valley, even though the center of town is less than a fifteen-minute drive away.
The campground features 49 sites designed to accommodate a variety of overland travelers. For recreational vehicles, there are 12 level, graveled, pull-through sites with full hookups, including city water, sewer, and 20- or 30-amp GFCI electrical outlets, accommodating rigs up to 35 feet. Another seven basic RV sites offer water and electricity for smaller pop-up campers, slide-ins, and camper vans. Tent campers are treated to 16 dedicated sites, many of which sit directly on the creek bank, allowing guests to pitch tents in the shade near the flowing water. Each tent site includes a parking space, picnic table, and fire pit. Centrally located amenities include a bathhouse famous among regular guests for its hot showers and excellent water pressure, a self-serve laundry room, free Wi-Fi, a children's playground, and a covered group pavilion equipped with water misters to combat the mid-summer desert heat.
Request one of the creek-side tent sites for maximum shade and the soothing sound of flowing water. Active-duty military members should call ahead to book, as the campground generously offers up to three nights of free camping for active service members and their immediate families.
