Sierra Nevada Brewing Company stands as a monument to the American craft beer revolution, rooted in the soil of Chico, California, on the ancestral lands of the Mechoopda Maidu people. Founded in 1980 by homebrewers Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi, the brewery began as a cobbled-together operation in a modest 3,000-square-foot warehouse. Operating with limited funds, Grossman engineered the early system using recycled dairy tanks, a soft-drink bottler, and scrap metal. In November 1980, the first batch of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was brewed, featuring the bold, piney, and citrusy notes of the then-novel Cascade hop. This single, uncompromising recipe sparked a national movement, transforming a niche hobby into a dominant force in American beverage culture.

The current flagship facility on East 20th Street, which opened in 1989, showcases the evolution from those scrap-metal beginnings into a marvel of sustainable industrial design. Visitors are greeted by a striking array of massive, gleaming copper brewing kettles. Grossman purchased these ornate vessels second-hand from Germany in 1984, shipping them across the Atlantic and waiting years until the company had the capital to install them. Beneath these historic kettles lies one of the most eco-conscious production breweries in the world, powered by a robust 2.8-megawatt microgrid of solar arrays and hydrogen fuel cells. On a guided tour, guests can walk beneath towering 800-barrel fermentation tanks, inhale the resinous perfume of whole-cone hops in the cold storage rooms, and peer down from the second-story catwalks to watch the modern bottling and canning lines in constant motion.

Beyond the brewhouse, the Chico campus offers a deeply grounded culinary and community experience centered around the Taproom and Restaurant. The kitchen operates on a strict farm-to-table philosophy, utilizing produce harvested directly from the certified organic Kitchen Garden and Estate Garden located just out back. Spent grain from the brewing process is recycled to bake fresh bread daily, and the menu features seasonal dishes alongside staples like the half-pound Big Pretzel paired with Torpedo IPA white cheddar beer cheese. For entertainment, the campus houses the Big Room, a legendary 350-seat live music venue adorned with warm mahogany, brass fixtures, and tiered club seating.
