Surfsand Resort

Oceanfront rooms steps from the sand, looking directly at Haystack Rock. A fully renovated Cannon Beach icon featuring the historic Wayfarer Restaurant.

Surfsand Resort stands as a premier oceanfront destination in Cannon Beach, positioned directly on the sand with unobstructed views of the iconic Haystack Rock. Established in 1967, this 95-room property completed a comprehensive 12-million-dollar renovation in mid-2024 under the direction of Plante's Hotel Renovation. The project completely reimagined the resort, upgrading every guest room, the public lobby, the indoor pool, and the historic on-site restaurant. Upon entering the modernized reception area, guests are greeted by a cerused wood plank ceiling, a vibrant mosaic wall, terrazzo tile floors, and custom oak chandeliers. A blown glass installation by Thompson Studio Glass adds a touch of local artistry, while a refurbished 1933 Clawtastic Taffy Machine dispenses saltwater taffy from Bruce’s Candy Kitchen, setting a playful, welcoming tone that bridges the resort’s mid-century origins with contemporary coastal design.

The guest rooms are distributed across four distinct buildings, each showcasing curated artwork by a different local artist to create a gallery-like feel throughout the property. Refurbished accommodations feature mango wood headboards, custom closet alcoves, contemporary flooring, and playful bathroom tiling. Many rooms include gas fireplaces, soaking tubs, and private balconies that frame the massive basalt monolith of Haystack Rock, located just offshore on the ancestral lands of the Tillamook and Clatsop peoples. For those wanting immediate beach access, the first-floor beachfront rooms feature sliding glass doors that open directly onto the sand, allowing guests to step from their private patios straight into the coastal breeze. The resort’s indoor heated pool and hot tub have also been refreshed with updated tiling and ambient lighting, complemented by a modernized fitness center equipped with Peloton bikes and Precor machines.

Dining at the resort centers around the Wayfarer Restaurant and Lounge, a Cannon Beach staple since 1977 that also received an extensive refresh during the renovation. As the only restaurant in town open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the Wayfarer serves classic Pacific Northwest seafood alongside regional wines, craft beers, and cocktails. Signature dishes like the Dungeness Crab Benedict can be enjoyed in the dining room or ordered directly to guest rooms via in-room tablets. Beyond the accommodations, the resort maintains a strong focus on community experiences, employing a Beachfront Concierge team and a dedicated Bonfire Butler who prepares evening beach bonfires complete with s’mores. The resort is famously pet-friendly, offering a VIP experience that includes the lobby's Bone Appetit Bistro, stocked with complimentary treats, and an outdoor pet washing station for rinsing sandy paws after a day of beach exploration.

Basecamp Tip

Book one of the first-floor beachfront rooms to step directly from your private patio onto the sand. In the evening, ask the resort's Bonfire Butler to set up a private beach bonfire with s'mores, and make sure to order the Crab Benedict for breakfast at the on-site Wayfarer Restaurant.
