Sylvia Beach Hotel

A historic, literary-themed boutique hotel on the cliffs of Newport's Nye Beach, offering rooms designed around authors and genres with no televisions or phones.

Hotel Sylvia, formerly known as the Sylvia Beach Hotel, stands on a windswept sandstone bluff overlooking Nye Beach in Newport, Oregon. Built in 1913 as the New Cliff House, this green-shingled Craftsman structure has spent over a century welcoming weary travelers, first as a railroad-era resort, then as the honeymoon-centric Hotel Gilmore, and eventually as a legendary sanctuary for book lovers. In 2024, the property was purchased by Portland-based VIP Hospitality Group, which completed a comprehensive, top-to-bottom renovation before reopening the doors in July 2025. The updated space preserves the historic bones of the coastal cottage while modernizing its comforts, offering twenty-two rooms designed specifically for quiet reflection, reading, and watching the Pacific tides.

Named in honor of Sylvia Beach, the pioneering American expatriate who founded Paris's iconic Shakespeare and Company bookstore, the hotel maintains a deep commitment to the literary arts. The recent renovation refined the room layout, expanding the count to twenty-two unique spaces. Seven of these are dedicated to specific authors (including William Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway, Maya Angelou, and Alice Walker), while the remaining fifteen are themed around literary genres such as Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, and Romance. In the Hemingway room, guests can relax in plush leather armchairs beside a fireplace, surrounded by curated bookshelves and custom artwork. While the historic decor has been streamlined with contemporary, vintage-inspired furnishings, the core philosophy remains unchanged: there are no televisions or in-room telephones, ensuring a peaceful digital detox. However, modern travelers will find complimentary WiFi throughout the property, making it easy to download a new novel to an e-reader.

Beyond the guest rooms, the hotel features communal spaces designed to foster quiet contemplation and casual conversation. The top floor houses the James Joyce Library, a cozy attic retreat lined with bookshelves, comfortable armchairs, and expansive windows that frame views of the churning ocean and the distant Yaquina Head Lighthouse. On the lower level, the historic dining room has been transformed into Café Sylvia. Open to both overnight guests and the public, the café serves a menu of morning scrambles, crepes, and fresh biscuits alongside handcrafted espresso drinks. Outside, an oceanfront patio with a fire pit offers a place to sit with a book, listen to the crashing surf, and watch the sunset over the water, keeping the century-old spirit of this coastal haven very much alive.
