A female-owned specialty roaster in Bozeman, crafting light-roast single-origins and innovative backcountry pour-overs across two distinct cafes.
Treeline Coffee Roasters is a cornerstone of Bozeman’s specialty coffee scene, deeply tied to the active, mountain-loving lifestyle of southwest Montana. The business began with founder Natalie Van Dusen, who discovered a passion for the craft during a motorcycle journey through Colombia. After watching a local farmer roast fresh coffee beans over an open flame on a stovetop, Van Dusen returned to the United States determined to master the process. She experimented with stovetop roasting in a cast-iron skillet for six years before leaving her tech career in San Francisco and relocating to Bozeman. In 2013, she launched Little Red Wagon Coffee Roasters, operating out of a converted trailer with a small six-pound San Franciscan roaster affectionately named Francis. Joined in 2014 by her childhood friend Deejay Newell, Van Dusen rebranded the business as Treeline Coffee Roasters in 2016 to better reflect their connection to the high-alpine landscapes and outdoor pursuits of the Gallatin Valley.
The operational heart of the female-owned and operated company is the Roasting Room, situated in the historic Mill District on Bozeman's Northside at 624 North Wallace Avenue. Housed in a bright, industrial building with large windows, this flagship location combines roasting, packaging, and a lively cafe under one roof. Treeline focuses primarily on light to medium roasts, a style that highlights the bright acidity and floral notes of their ethically sourced beans rather than the smoky characteristics of darker roasts. At the Wallace Avenue cafe, the traditional bulky espresso setup is replaced by a sleek, undercounter Mavam espresso machine. This design keeps the bar open and low, encouraging direct, friendly interaction between the baristas and locals stopping in for a cortado, a brown sugar miso latte, or a seasonal pour-over.
In July 2018, Treeline expanded its footprint by opening a second cafe downtown at 136 West Main Street, built in partnership with the expansion of The Lark Hotel. This Main Street location features a warm, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic with light wood tones, pastel accents, and exposed cross-laminated timber, serving as a bustling social hub for both travelers and residents. True to their mountain-town ethos, the co-owners developed innovative coffee solutions for backcountry adventures. Their signature GEO single-serve pour-over packets feature pre-ground specialty coffee inside a compact filter pouch with cardboard wings that suspend over any standard camp mug. This portable design has made Treeline a favorite companion for hikers, trail builders, and skiers heading into the nearby Bridger Range, proving that a high-quality, ethically traceable cup of coffee does not have to be left behind at the trailhead.
Head to the Wallace Avenue Roasting Room for a spacious workspace and a view of the active roasting floor, or grab a quick espresso at the Main Street location before exploring downtown.
