Off-grid safari tents and wood-burning stoves in a pine forest just seven miles from Glacier National Park's west entrance.
Under Canvas Glacier operates as a seasonal glamping retreat in Coram, Montana, situated seven miles from the west entrance of Glacier National Park. Spanning a wooded property of mature pine and fir trees, the camp offers a structured way to experience the outdoors without traditional camping gear. The property is designed with a low-impact footprint, maintaining dedicated green spaces and using low-emission lighting in alignment with International Dark-Sky principles to preserve the visibility of the Montana night sky. Guests check in at a central lobby tent, which serves as the social hub of the camp, before dispersing to their individual canvas dwellings along a network of unpaved walking paths.
The camp features 59 safari-style tents divided into several distinct layouts, including Safari, Deluxe, Suite, and Stargazer configurations. Inside, the design relies on West Elm furnishings, king-size beds, and high-quality linens. To maintain an off-grid atmosphere, there are no electrical outlets or Wi-Fi in the tents: instead, guests are provided with portable USB battery packs to charge phones, alongside battery-powered lanterns and fans. Heating is provided by individual wood-burning stoves, which staff prep with firewood and kindling daily. Deluxe and Suite options include private, ensuite bathrooms equipped with flush toilets and eco-conscious, pull-chain showers designed to minimize water use. These private bathrooms are stocked with plant-based EO bath products, which are manufactured in a zero-waste facility. The Stargazer tents are particularly notable for a clear viewing window positioned directly above the bed, allowing for constellation spotting from beneath the covers.
Dining on the property centers around Embers Café, a fast-casual, walk-up window restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner. The morning menu includes specialty espresso drinks, breakfast sandwiches, and parfaits made with local Montana huckleberries, while evening options feature salads, charcuterie boards, and warm bowls paired with local craft beers or wine. Because of the local wildlife, the camp enforces a strict policy against keeping food inside the tents, directing all dining to the communal areas. Daily programming is included in the stay, featuring morning yoga sessions on a dedicated deck equipped with lululemon mats, live acoustic music, and nightly campfires where guests gather for complimentary s'mores. The camp is pet-friendly and operates seasonally from late May through mid-September, offering a basecamp that bridges the gap between rugged Montana wilderness and hotel-style conveniences.
Book a Deluxe or Suite tent if you want a private ensuite bathroom: Safari tents rely on shared bathhouses. Also, pack a warm headlamp for navigating the unpaved paths to the fire pit after dark.
