Boulders Resort & Spa

An organic desert sanctuary of adobe casitas woven into massive granite formations, featuring Jay Morrish golf, a 33,000-square-foot spa, and regional dining.

Boulders Resort & Spa, Scottsdale, Curio Collection by Hilton, was established in 1985, setting a new standard for luxury desert architecture that respects rather than dominates its surroundings. Designed by architect Bob Bacon, then with the firm Allen & Philp, the resort is sculpted directly into a dramatic landscape of twelve-million-year-old granite formations in the high Sonoran Desert foothills. Bacon’s organic design philosophy is evident from the moment of arrival. The main lodge features reception doors crafted from four different hand-rubbed woods, arranged to mimic the natural stacking of the massive boulders outside. Inside the lobby, glass skylights flood the space with natural Arizona light, while cozy fireplaces, flagstone flooring, and recessed wall niches display authentic regional art and American Indian crafts.

The resort’s accommodations consist of 160 casitas and 54 multi-bedroom villas, each designed to harmonize with the earth-toned terrain. The 550-square-foot casitas feature hand-hewn wood-beamed ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces, and private patios that look out over the ancient rocks and saguaro cacti. Inside, Southwestern warmth meets modern comfort with custom-milled vanities, flagstone floors, and bathrooms featuring walk-in showers with pebble-tiled walls. For dining, the signature Palo Verde restaurant serves contemporary Southwestern cuisine, including Sonoran spiced beef tenderloin, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the duck pond and the sixth fairway of the South Course. Down at the nearby El Pedregal shopping and dining complex, the Spotted Donkey Cantina serves modern Mexican dishes like Hatch chili pork stew and boasts an extensive tequila list featuring an exclusive Herradura Double Barrel Reposado Tequila.

Recreation at the resort centers around its vast natural footprint and world-class amenities. Golfers play on two championship 18-hole courses, the North and South courses, both designed by Jay Morrish to wrap seamlessly around rugged granite outcroppings. Wellness seekers gather at the 33,000-square-foot spa, which houses 24 treatment rooms, a quiet labyrinth, and an authentic tipi used for meditation. The spa also features an Organic Garden spanning 5,600 square feet, which supplies fresh produce for the on-site Spa Café. Outside, the landscape remains a sanctuary for native desert wildlife, where guests frequently spot quail, javelinas, and roadrunners. Guided rock climbing on the resort's signature boulder formations and evening stargazing sessions with a professional astronomer connect visitors directly to the deep geological history of this Yavapai and O'odham homeland.

Basecamp Tip

For a deeper connection to the landscape, book the guided petroglyph tour through the concierge early in your stay to view ancient rock art hidden on the property. Afterward, schedule an evening stargazing session with the resort's professional astronomer, as the dark desert skies here offer exceptional clarity.
