Civana Wellness Resort

A mid-century modern wellness retreat in Carefree, featuring a world-class hydrotherapy spa, plant-forward dining, and daily desert movement classes.

Civana Wellness Resort and Spa, located in the desert enclave of Carefree, Arizona, was born from a complete transformation of a historic property. Originally opened in 1963 as the Carefree Inn, the resort was a mid-century playground that hosted celebrities like Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, and Dick Van Dyke during the heyday of the nearby Carefree Studios. After the property went through several ownership changes and eventually fell into foreclosure, founders Marc Skalla and Adam Ross purchased the 20-acre estate in 2017. Following a comprehensive 40 million dollar renovation, they reopened the property in February 2019 with a mission to make wellness more approachable, flexible, and attainable. The physical design of the resort embraces its mid-century roots with low-slung, minimalist architecture, airy indoor-outdoor spaces, and a soothing palette of muted earth tones that mirror the surrounding Sonoran Desert.

The resort features 176 light-filled guest rooms and suites, designed with clean lines and natural materials like stone, wood, and glass. Among these, the Spa King Rooms are located near the wellness facilities and feature private balconies or patios with views of the Continental Mountains, deep soaking tubs, and specialized sleep amenities like Hatch alarm clocks and Vitruvi oil diffusers. Culinary offerings at the resort are led by two distinct dining venues that prioritize plant-forward, nutrient-dense ingredients without being overly restrictive. Seed serves as a casual daytime cafe and specialty market, offering cold-pressed juices, nourishing bowls, and wellness lattes. For dinner, Terras provides a sophisticated, farm-to-table menu featuring sustainable seafood, grass-fed meats, and organic produce, alongside a selection of organic wines and craft cocktails.

At the heart of the Civana experience is its 22,000-square-foot spa, which features 22 treatment rooms and a unique focus on hydrotherapy. Guests can experience the signature Aqua Therapy Circuit, a European-designed water ritual that includes a Kneipp hot and cold wading pool, a Tepidarium therapeutic soaking pool, a cold deluge shower, and a KLAFS Sanarium, which is the only one of its kind in the continental United States. Beyond the spa, the resort offers more than a dozen complimentary wellness classes daily, ranging from active physical pursuits like aerial yoga, pickleball, and guided desert hikes to mindfulness practices such as sound bowl healing, desert bathing, and stargazing. This combination of structured programming and unpretentious relaxation allows visitors to customize their own paths to well-being.

Basecamp Tip

Arrive at the spa early to complete the Aqua Therapy Circuit. The contrast of the Kneipp hot-and-cold wading pools and the KLAFS Sanarium (the only one in the continental United States) is the ultimate way to reset your nervous system.
