The Joshua Tree House is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom 1949 hacienda that stands as one of the high desert's premier design-led retreats. Founded by designers Sara and Rich Combs in 2015, the property was originally discovered on Craigslist as a fixer-upper before being meticulously restored into a slow-living sanctuary. Located on a 1.25-acre plot populated by over 100 mature Joshua trees, the house sits just ten minutes from the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park and a short walk from the local shops of the village. The architecture honors its mid-century roots with original wood-beamed ceilings, a large flagstone fireplace, and a light-filled layout designed to encourage reflection and creative focus.
Inside, the interiors showcase a thoughtfully curated blend of rustic modern and bohemian design. The master bedroom features east-facing windows that frame the morning sun, an en-suite bathroom, and an attached sunroom complete with an indoor hammock. Across the living room, the second bedroom, known as the Tent Room, offers a glamping-inspired atmosphere with a draped canvas canopy over the king bed, a wood shiplap ceiling, and direct access to the courtyard. The main living space is anchored by a record player with a curated vinyl collection, hanging chairs, and custom artwork by Heather Day. In the kitchen, custom Fireclay Tile in a star-and-cross pattern complements the modern rustic cabinetry, while details like Casper mattresses and locally roasted coffee beans elevate the everyday experience.
The outdoor spaces are designed to maximize connection with the high desert environment. A wide front porch serves as the perfect vantage point for early morning coffee, while the rear courtyard features a charcoal grill, a dining area, and a fire pit. For soaking under the dark night skies, a private Jacuzzi hot tub is available year-round, surrounded by ancient desert flora. During the warm summer months from May to October, guests can cool off in an eight-foot DIY cowboy pool, a repurposed stock tank equipped with a custom sand filter. While the proximity to the village means occasional highway hum can be heard, the property remains a peaceful basecamp for exploring the Mojave.
