Sleep inside a piece of Wyoming's agricultural history at this landmark 1920 flour mill, where towering concrete silos meet the rushing waters of Goose Creek.
The Mill Inn stands as a towering monument of early 20th-century industrial design along the banks of Goose Creek in Sheridan. Originally constructed in 1920 and 1921 as the Sheridan Flouring Mills, Inc., the complex was built to replace a downtown mill that had been destroyed by a catastrophic fire in 1919. Designed by the engineering firm Ballinger and McAllister, the reinforced concrete structure was built to withstand the harsh plains winters with thick concrete walls and sturdy brickwork. At its operational peak, the mill was the largest and most modern facility of its kind in Wyoming, boasting a daily capacity of 1,000 barrels of flour and serving as one of the state's largest taxpayers. Today, the monumental hundred-foot-tall concrete grain silos still dominate the local skyline, complete with the original, colorful hand-painted logo on the south side depicting a cowboy on a bucking bronco alongside the historic slogan: 'Best Out West Enriched Flour, Tomahawk Feeds'.
In 1978, the industrial complex was carefully converted into a motel, preserving the structural integrity of the historic offices, packaging areas, and storage spaces. The Moody family purchased the property in 1992, embarking on an extensive restoration to address deferred maintenance while keeping the building's working-class heritage intact. Inside the lobby, guests are welcomed by a curated collection of authentic Western and Native American memorabilia, reflecting the town's position at the historic crossroads of Crow, Cheyenne, and Arapaho territories. The building's unique industrial footprint means that each of the 42 guest rooms and suites has its own distinct shape and character. Throughout the halls and rooms, the walls are adorned with historic Western photography by the renowned frontier photographer L.A. Huffman, offering a quiet, visual connection to the homesteaders and ranchers who once brought their grain to these very silos.
