Nepenthe

Perched 808 feet above the Pacific, this historic 1949 redwood-and-adobe lodge serves its famous Ambrosia Burger alongside sweeping coastal views and a legendary bohemian history.

Nepenthe stands 808 feet above the Pacific Ocean, a legendary Big Sur landmark constructed on the site of a 1925 log cabin. In 1947, Bill and Madelaine (Lolly) Fassett purchased the cabin and the surrounding 12 acres from Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth, who had bought the property on a whim during their brief marriage. Recognizing that the sweeping coastal views were too magnificent to keep to themselves, the Fassetts envisioned an open-air pavilion where travelers and locals could gather to forget their sorrows. They hired architect Rowan Maiden, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, to design a structure that would blend organically with the rugged landscape. Built by local brothers Frank and Walter Trotter, the restaurant was framed with local old-growth redwood and adobe bricks that Lolly made with her own hands, opening its doors on April 24, 1949.

The design of the lodge utilizes an innovative framing technique of interwoven, sandwiched redwood with no standard two-inch lumber, creating a structure that feels like a natural outcropping of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Inside, a massive copper fireplace anchors the main dining room, while the wide-open terrace outside offers panoramic views of the south coast. The restaurant's name derives from the Greek word for an anti-sorrow potion, a theme represented by its phoenix emblem, symbolizing renewal. Over the decades, Nepenthe became a sanctuary for artists, writers, and counterculture icons. Scribes like Henry Miller, who once lived in the original log cabin, became regulars, alongside visitors like Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Joan Baez, and Kim Novak. The interior even served as a primary filming location for the 1965 film "The Sandpiper" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Today, Nepenthe remains family-owned and operated by the third generation of the Fassett family, led by general manager Kirk Gafill. The dining experience balances this rich bohemian heritage with a relaxed, come-as-you-are atmosphere where dusty hikers and highway travelers share the same communal tables. The menu highlights California-Greek Mediterranean flavors, anchored by the famous Ambrosia Burger, a ground steak sandwich served on a toasted French roll with the family's secret sweet-and-tangy Ambrosia Sauce. Visitors can pair their meals with regional wines, including selections from the nearby Pisoni vineyards, or browse the adjacent Phoenix Shop, which evolved from traveling merchants who once displayed their wares on Lolly's living room floor.
