Rustic Rook Resort

Sleep in a canvas safari tent or an upcycled grain bin under a vast desert sky, with the Great Sand Dunes and Sangre de Cristo peaks as your front porch view.

Rustic Rook Resort is a privately built glamping sanctuary set on 120 acres of high-desert sagebrush in Mosca, Colorado, just 19 miles from the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Opened in 2020 by owners Annette Ostrander-Fenske and Judah Fenske, the resort was built from the ground up without corporate backing, establishing a car-free layout where guests leave their vehicles in a central lot and haul their gear to their quarters in hand-pulled wagons. The accommodations range from standard canvas safari tents to upcycled metal grain bin villas topped with stargazing loft domes, providing a structured yet rustic immersion in the San Luis Valley. Each site faces the dramatic, 14,000-foot peaks of the Sangre de Cristo range, offering a front-row view of the morning alpenglow and the massive dunes rising against the mountains.

The accommodations are designed to balance the simplicity of camping with the comforts of traditional lodging. The 28 fully furnished glamping tents feature comfortable king or double beds, warm linens, USB battery power packs, lanterns, and wood-burning stoves to combat the chilly high-altitude nights. Five of these tents, known as the estate tents, include private en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, while other tent guests utilize a modern, six-stall bathhouse trailer equipped with individual locking doors and hot water. For a more architectural stay, the resort's upcycled grain bin studio villas offer climate-controlled, year-round comfort, repurposing historic agricultural silos into modern cabins. A fenced-in dog park welcomes four-legged travelers, ensuring that pets can run freely within the secure compound.

Dining at the resort emphasizes communal, outdoor gathering without the hassle of camp kitchen prep. Every morning begins with complimentary hot breakfast burritos, with fillings ranging from local green chili and bacon to chorizo, pulled pork, or roasted vegetables, paired with hot coffee in the central lobby building constructed in 2022. For dinner, guests can pre-order portioned-out grill packages containing marinated steaks, chicken, burgers, or veggie patties, complete with fresh seasoning and sliced potatoes, to cook on the communal propane grills. As night falls over the valley, the community gathers around the central fire pit for complimentary s'mores, watching the sky darken in an area renowned for its lack of light pollution, where the Milky Way is bright enough to cast faint shadows across the sagebrush.

Basecamp Tip

Rent one of the resort's specialized sand sleds from the lobby before sunset and head into the national park for a night session. Sliding down the massive dunes under a brilliant canopy of stars is a singular experience, made possible by the park's official International Dark Sky Association designation. Be sure to pack a headlamp with a red-light setting to preserve your night vision while navigating the sand.
