The Shelburne Hotel, established in 1896 in the coastal town of Seaview, Washington, holds the distinction of being the longest continuously operating hotel in the state. Originally constructed by architect Charles Beaver as a summer retreat for wealthy travelers from Portland, the property was named after a luxury hotel in Dublin. Today, the hotel stands behind a classic white picket fence, its deep blue Victorian facade contrasting with the moody Pacific Northwest sky and lush, cottage-style gardens. Stepping inside reveals a preserved interior where the scent of old wood and polished brass grounds the experience. Original stained-glass windows filter the coastal light, casting warm, colorful pools across the lobby floorboards, which retain a gentle, historic creak.

The structural history of the property is as storied as its hospitality. In 1911, the Hoare family, who had purchased the hotel a few years prior, hired a horse and carriage team to pull the entire building across the road, where they joined it with an existing structure to expand the inn to fifteen rooms. Decades later, in 1977, David Campiche and Laurie Anderson took ownership, dedicating forty years to restoring the property. They sourced the hotel's famous stained-glass windows from a demolished church in England, finding a place for each pane throughout the building. In 1983, they enclosed the original front porch to establish the Shelburne Pub, framing the space with these historic leaded-glass windows. In 2018, the legacy passed to Tiffany and Brady Turner of Adrift Hospitality, local hoteliers who had celebrated their own wedding reception at the hotel in 1999. Under their stewardship, the rooms were updated with bright, contemporary finishes that complement the late-nineteenth-century woodwork and antique clawfoot tubs.

An evening at the hotel centers on the cozy warmth of the Shelburne Pub, where guests gather under the glow of the English stained glass to enjoy elevated pub fare, local oysters, and craft cocktails. Afterward, the Inglenook offers a wood-paneled retreat for a game of pool or shuffleboard beside a warm fireplace, surrounded by shelves of books. The experience extends to the landscaped gardens, where a stone path leads to wood-fired cedar barrel saunas, providing a warm contrast to the damp coastal air. Guests also have access to complimentary beach cruisers for exploring the paved Discovery Trail through the nearby dunes, as well as the heated indoor saline pool at the sister property, Adrift Hotel, located just down the road. It remains a thoughtfully preserved coastal landmark that balances its rich late-nineteenth-century heritage with modern Pacific Northwest hospitality.
