Overlook the Columbia River Gorge from a classic Cascadian-style lodge, complete with soaring timber framing, elevated treehouses, and woodland trails in Stevenson, Washington.
Skamania Lodge stands on a 175-acre forested bluff overlooking the Columbia River, just outside Stevenson, Washington. Built in 1993, the resort was designed by Ankrom Moisan Architects to evoke the grand Cascadian style of the early twentieth century. The main building features heavy timber framing, including recycled hundred-year-old timbers salvaged from an abandoned factory, along with slate floors and a monumental 85-foot stone fireplace that serves as the focal point of the great room. While the property was constructed on what was once a county landfill, it has been transformed into a sprawling woodland retreat that honors the cultural history of the Columbia River Gorge. Throughout the lodge, the walls are adorned with Native American art, petroglyph rubbings, and historical photography, offering guests a self-guided tour of the region's heritage.
The accommodations at the resort have expanded beyond the 254 guest rooms in the main lodge to include elevated treehouses and luxury glamping tents. Designed by Seattle-based firm MG2, the treehouses are suspended up to 40 feet above the forest floor among towering Douglas firs. These modern, wooden cabins feature indoor-outdoor fireplaces, expansive windows, wrap-around decks, and private outdoor fire pits, with some configurations offering a queen bed tucked into a viewing nook. For a closer connection to the forest floor, the resort's canvas safari-style glamping tents provide king or queen beds, bright red Smeg refrigerators, and private decks. Because the tents are positioned near an active rail corridor, the lodge provides white noise machines and earplugs to ensure a quiet night's sleep, while adjacent bathing tents offer private showers and deep soaking tubs under open-air roofs.
Dining at the lodge centers on the Cascade Dining Room and the River Rock Lounge, where the culinary team emphasizes the agricultural bounty of the Pacific Northwest. Menus feature locally sourced meats, forest mushrooms, and seasonal produce, often paired with wines from the surrounding Columbia River Gorge AVA. Beyond dining, the resort's 175 acres host a variety of recreational amenities, including the Waterleaf Spa with its indoor pool and adults-only outdoor hot tub. Golfers can utilize the nine-hole short course and an 18-hole putting course, which replaced the original championship course in 2020. For active exploration, the property features over three miles of hiking trails, an aerial adventure park with seven zip lines and three sky bridges, and dedicated lanes for axe throwing, ensuring that the forest itself remains the central focus of any stay.
If you are staying in the glamping tents, use the provided white noise machine to mask the sounds of the nearby rail corridor, or book one of the high-elevation treehouses for a quieter, elevated forest experience.
