Safari-style tents in the forested White Salmon River Valley. Mount Hood views, local wines, and outdoor adventures.
Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge sits on 120 acres of forested hillside in Washington's White Salmon River Valley, roughly 15 miles north of the town of White Salmon. Opened in May 2025 as the brand's first camp in the Pacific Northwest, this seasonal retreat operates from late April through October. The property is designed to integrate with the surrounding evergreen landscape, providing clear views of Mount Hood rising in the distance. Instead of being positioned directly on the Columbia River, the camp serves as a quiet basecamp in the valley, positioned near the whitewater of the White Salmon River. The main lobby tent acts as the central hub, featuring contemporary furnishings, local artwork, a boutique retail space, and an outdoor yoga deck.
The camp features 50 safari-inspired canvas tents built on elevated wooden decks, including 19 suites designed for couples, families, or groups. Accommodations like the Deluxe and Stargazer tents feature plush king-size beds, high-thread-count linens, and private en-suite bathrooms equipped with hot pull-chain showers, flushing toilets, and organic bath products. Unlike older Under Canvas locations that rely on wood-burning stoves, these tents are equipped with gas fireplaces to keep the spaces warm during cool Pacific Northwest nights. The Stargazer tents include a viewing window positioned directly above the bed, allowing guests to view the night sky without leaving their covers. To maintain a peaceful environment and minimize environmental impact, the tents do not have electrical outlets, instead relying on USB battery packs, battery-powered fans, and bedside lanterns.
Dining at the camp centers around Embers, the on-site indoor-outdoor café that serves seasonal, regionally sourced dishes. Breakfast options range from barista-style coffees and fresh pastries to avocado toast and granola, while dinner menus highlight West Coast ingredients like Columbia River salmon, local seafood, the signature Canvas Burger, and fresh salads. Guests can pair their meals with craft beers and curated wines from the Columbia River Gorge's nearby vineyards. In keeping with the camp's mindful approach to the environment, food is not permitted inside the guest tents. Evenings at the property feature communal campfires with complimentary s'mores, live acoustic music sets, and stargazing. The camp's adventure concierge is available on-site to assist in booking local excursions, including whitewater rafting on the White Salmon River, fly fishing, and mountain biking along the scenic ridgelines of the Cascade Mountains.
Because the camp has a strict no-food-in-tents policy to protect local wildlife, plan to enjoy all snacks and meals at the Embers café or around the communal fire pits.
