Granite-dominated Sierra Nevada alpine terrain with glacially carved valleys, towering waterfalls, and ancient giant sequoia groves. Yosemite spans from 2,000 ft foothills to 13,114 ft high crest — one of the most iconic landscapes in the American West.
For full-access including the cross-Sierra high pass (Tioga Road), plan for the typical open window from late May/June through autumn. Expect peak crowds in June–August (July 2024 saw 574,000 visits). May, September, and October offer the best balance of access and manageable crowds.
Yosemite is one of the highest-demand parks nationally with 4.12 million recreation visits in 2024, which implies extraordinary landscapes but also significant crowd and parking pressure. Value depends on your tolerance for congestion and ability to plan around seasonal access windows.
A minimum of 2 days covers the major frontcountry nodes in Yosemite Valley. 3–4 days supports adding high country (Tuolumne Meadows), Mariposa Grove, and Glacier Point when the cross-Sierra pass is open.
October is cooler than summer and still a high-visitation month. High-elevation snow and road closures become more likely later in fall depending on storm timing. It's one of the best months for fall color and reduced crowds compared to summer peak.
NPS publishes two seasonal routes: 270 miles / ~5 hours in summer–fall conditions (when Tioga Pass is open), and 450 miles / ~9 hours when the high pass is closed in winter.
