Stehekin Valley Ranch

Stehekin Valley Ranch

An off-grid mountain refuge nine miles up-valley from Lake Chelan, offering all-inclusive rustic cabins, family-style cookhouse meals, and horseback trail rides.

Stehekin Valley Ranch operates as an off-grid mountain refuge located nine miles up-valley from the Stehekin Landing, deep within the valley of the North Cascades. Established in 1983 by Cliff and Kerry Courtney, the ranch sits on a historic 20-acre homestead that has been in the Courtney family since Esther and Ray Courtney purchased the land in the early 1950s. For decades, the family ran their mountain outfitting business, Cascade Corrals, from this clearing. In 2023, Cliff and Kerry passed the stewardship of the ranch to their niece Mistaya Johnston and her husband Jake, keeping the property strictly family-run. Because no roads connect Stehekin to the outside world, reaching the ranch requires arriving by passenger ferry, such as the Lady of the Lake or the Stehekin Ferry, or by floatplane to the landing, followed by a ride on the ranch's scheduled shuttle bus.

The lodging options at the ranch cater to varying levels of comfort while maintaining a rustic, communal character. Guests can choose from classic Tent Cabins, which feature canvas walls on sturdy wooden frames with real beds and shared bath facilities, or fully enclosed wooden Ranch Cabins that include private bathrooms, electricity, and limited outlets. For a more unique stay, the ranch offers sheep-wagon-style Wagons designed for two, as well as the spacious Ranch House, which accommodates larger groups of six to nine people. The property operates primarily on a solar power system, meaning high-wattage appliances like hair dryers cannot be used, encouraging an authentic step back in time. While satellite internet has been introduced, the ranch maintains a thoughtful WiFi policy designed to keep guests connected with family without disrupting the quiet, screen-free atmosphere of the wilderness.

Stays at the ranch are structured as all-inclusive packages that cover lodging, in-valley transportation, and three daily meals served in the historic Cookhouse. The Cookhouse still features its traditional sawdust floor, and meals are served buffet-style, showcasing fresh ingredients, home-baked breads, and eggs from the resident chickens. Breakfast and dinner are served daily, and guests can pack a sack lunch to take on their daytime excursions. From the ranch, visitors can set out on horseback trail rides featuring Norwegian Fjord horses, rent electric or mountain bikes to ride down to the Stehekin Pastry Company, kayak on Lake Chelan, or hike the surrounding trails of the North Cascades.
